Naomi's Latest Domestic Dispute
And Naomi Campbell wonders why good help is so hard to find.
The supermodel appeared in court Tuesday to answer to charges that she assaulted her former housekeeper with a cell phone in March. The appearance came the day after she was sued by a different maid, who claims she, too, was roughed up by the catwalker.
Campbell, who has denied wielding a cell phone in a dispute that sent her ex-housekeeper to the hospital, did not speak during her brief appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court.
The model and her former employee, Ana Scolavino, were allegedly arguing over a missing pair of jeans that Campbell had accused Scolavino of stealing. Campbell allegedly smacked Scolavino in the back of the head with a cell phone, causing a wound that required four staples to close.
The supermodel has called Scolavino's version of events "completely untrue." If convicted of the criminal charges against her, the British-born Campbell could face up to seven years in prison and deportation.
On Tuesday, the prosecution told the judge that no grand jury action had been taken in the case and that a plea bargain was possible. The defense agreed to an adjournment, pending a potential plea deal and Criminal Court Judge Evelyn Laporte ordered all relevant parties to return to court on Sept. 27.
Outside the courthouse, a media crush waited to catch a glimpse of Campbell, who dressed in a slim black dress and four-inch-heels for the occasion. The model, her attorney and several members of her entourage were forced to wait inside until a car arrived to whisk them away, according to the Associated Press.
While Campbell's phone hang-up may have been put on hold for the summer, the fashionista still faces the outcome of new allegations brought against her by Gaby Gibson, a maid who told the New York Post in April that Campbell struck her in January during an impassioned search for yet another missing pair of blue jeans.
"She said it was to teach me a lesson," Gibson recalled to the Post.
Gibson filed a one-page lawsuit Monday in Manhattan's state Supreme Court accusing Campbell of personal injury, employment discrimination, civil assault and battery, and seeking unspecified damages.
It's certainly not the first time Campbell has been accused of mistreating her staff. To review some of the high-fashion diva's greatest hits:
In 2000, she pleaded guilty to hitting her former personal assistant, Georgina Galani, in the head with a telephone--twice.
In 2003, she was sued by an ex-administrative assistant, Simone Craig, who alleged that the supermodel struck her and tossed a phone at her during an argument in 2001.
In 2004, another maid, Millicent Burke, alleged Campbell slapped her across the face during a fight in her Park Avenue apartment. Campbell eventually copped to the smack, but blamed Burke for starting the altercation.
