Murder Conviction for C-Murder
Maybe C-Murder should have chosen a friendlier-sounding moniker?
The rapper received an automatic sentence of life behind bars on Tuesday after a Louisiana jury convicted him of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy.
Relatives of C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, began to sob when the verdict was read and were escorted from the Gretna, Louisiana, courtroom. Miller is the younger brother of rapper, actor, sports agent, basketball player and multimillionaire entrepreneur Master P and uncle to Lil' Romeo. A third Miller brother is another well-known rapper, Silkk the Shocker.
The family plans to appeal the verdict, C-Murder's father, Percy Miller Sr. told reporters outside the courtroom. "My son didn't do that."
The victim, Steve Thomas, was beaten and shot to death on January 12, 2002, outside the Platinum Club in Harvey, Louisiana, where he had been participating in an emcee battle. He was said to have been a fan of C-Murder's.
After the verdict, Thomas' father, George, said his son could now "rest in peace."
On the prosecution's side, two witnesses testified that Miller beat and shot Thomas in a melee outside the club.
The defense presented nine witnesses who countered that testimony but ultimately were unable to convince jurors Miller wasn't involved in the fracas when the defense witnesses gave different descriptions about what the rapper was wearing and where he was in the club.
The jury also disregarded a last-minute appeals court ruling presented Tuesday before final arguments that they could find the 30-year-old innocent of second-degree murder, which carried a mandatory life sentence, but guilty of manslaughter, which carried a 40-year sentence.
When the life sentence was handed down, Jefferson Parish Assistant District Attorney Douglas W. Freese said, per wire reports, "I believe the killer has been put where he belongs."
Defense attorney Ronald J. Rokosky did not speak to reporters following the verdict.
C-Murder was signed as a solo artist to his big brother's label No Limits Records and a member of the label's group Tru before heading out on his own with 2000's Trapped In Crime. C-Murder was already incarcerated by the time his last album, Tru Dawgs, was released in 2002.
