MTV's Bi-Curious Look at Love
After all, why limit yourself to only half the world's population?
MTV execs may have asked themselves that very question on the road to greenlighting the 10-episode reality series A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, which will feature 32 men and women vying for the affections of the 25-year-old entertainer Time magazine called "the Madonna of MySpace" (a site-best 2 million-plus friends and counting).
The sure-to-be-steamy bisexual dating show, a first for a network that doesn't specifically target the LGBT crowd, will premiere Oct. 9, according to Television Week, which reported Thursday that the project had been given the go-ahead.
"Tila Tequila made a name for herself by doing things her way, captivating legions of fans online, both men and women. Now she is taking that attitude and sex appeal to her own TV series where she is looking for a mate...by again, captivating a group of both men and women," Tony DiSanto, executive VP of series development and programming for MTV, told the trade.
In a premise that's recognizable to fans of Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, I Love New York and competition series in general, whether they involve romance or fashion design, 16 guys and 16 gals will live in Tila's house and compete to impress her. Each week, she'll give some of those prospective suitors the boot.
Tila Tequila, whose real last name is Nguyen, was born in Singapore to Vietnamese parents and raised in Houston. She has posed for Playboy's Website, appeared on the cover of Stuff and the U.K. edition of Maxim, and was featured in Rolling Stone's 2006 Hot List issue and in Time's most recent Person of the Year issue, the one with the mirror on the cover proclaiming "You" to be the person of the year, thanks to all the ways in which people can express themselves via the Internet.
"I joined MySpace in September 2003," the model-singer-entrepreneur, who currently describes herself on the social networking Website as "the baddest bitch on the block," told Time last year. "At that time no one was on there at all. I felt like a loser while all the cool kids were at some other school. So I mass emailed between 30,000 and 50,000 people and told them to come over. Everybody joined overnight."
Visitors to her page can listen to self-published tracks such as "F--- Ya Man" and "Paralyze," as well as buy Tila Tequila merchandise, download ringtones and, as is the case with many MySpace members, read her blog.
"There's a million hot naked chicks on the Internet," she said. "There's a difference between those girls and me. Those chicks don't talk back to you."
