MTV Spawns Brandy Birth Series
Taking a cue from TLC's successful Baby Story series and trying to find a bankable follow-up to its phenomenal reality sitcom The Osbournes, the cable music network has confirmed its long-rumored plans to deliver a mini-documentary following R&B star Brandy through the last stages of her pregnancy, climaxing with the birth of her baby daughter.
Diary Presents: Brandy--Special Delivery will premiere June 18 at 10:30 p.m. in the time slot formerly occupied by The Osbournes, which is on hiatus pending its second season. The special--essentially an expanded version of the network's Diary series--will offer a glimpse of the daily routine of the 23-year-old chanteuse as she learns to juggle the demands of her impending motherhood with her music and acting.
"It is my hope that MTV viewers will take away a greater appreciation of the responsibilities of a young woman balancing career and family," Brandy said in a statement. "Throughout this experience, I have been incredibly blessed with the love and support of my family, friends and fans."
Now in production, Special Delivery will run for four or five episodes depending on when Brandy goes into labor and will conclude with the birth of the baby, according to Daily Variety.
Brandy is due in late June.
Instead of filming 24-7 as the network did during the initial four-month shoot on The Osbournes, MTV will instead spend about half the time with Brandy to give her some private time.
"MTV is there with Brandy and her family through some of the most important aspects of her life and career," says Lois Curren, MTV's senior vice president of development. "From baby showers and doctors visits to photo shoots and recording sessions, fans will get an inside look at what this working expectant mom's daily routine is like."
And unlike The Osbournes, which used hidden cameras throughout the house, the network is giving Brandy cameras she can operate herself.
Curren says that won't keep Brandy from offering such scintillating as information as "how she's feeling."
The erstwhile Moesha star--who secretly got hitched last year to record producer Robert Smith--surprised fans when she announced she was preggers in February. A month later, Brandy's new album, Full Moon, entered the charts at number one.
The Brandy reality series isn't the first post-Osbournes idea MTV has batted around. The network is also considering sending a camera crew out to document the life of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
