Waging a Living

B+
What American dream? According to this socially minded doc, more than 30 million U.S. workers are stuck in poverty-level jobs. Filmed over three years, Waging focuses on four such low-wage earners--their hopes, struggles, setbacks and accomplishments. They range from nursing assistant Jean Reynolds, who supports three children (one with terminal cancer) and two grandchildren on $11 per hour, to mother of five Barbara Brooks, whose incremental increase in wages means less government assistance, so she's "hustling backwards. " Director Roger Weisberg presents plenty of sobering statistics, but it's his ability to get honest, sometimes heartbreaking human stories onscreen that makes this compelling viewing. Here's a valuable tip: Spend your bucks on this eye-opening flick.
