We were just thinking, "Hmmm, when is there going to be another Dutch import that argues nature vs. nurture?" And then this Oscar-nominated flicks arrives to tackle that question. This handsomely sentimental movie finds two orphaned sisters who get separated and are forced to live on opposite sides of the border between Germany and the Netherlands on the eve of World War II.
Sickly Thekla Reuten grows up with genteel, well-heeled Dutch parents and falls in love with a Jew, while farm-raised (and much abused) Nadja Uhl eventually marries an SS officer. This, naturally, leads to a lot more than pass-the-butter spats during family reunions. What follows is a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching examination of the power of circumstance, one that's hard to turn away from. Go Dutch for this one.
