The Trilogy: An Amazing Couple

B
This installment of Lucas Belvaux's ambitious trilogy about French parallel lives (the other two, On the Run and After the Life--which, according to the director, can be viewed in any order--include several of the same characters) focuses on Ornella Muti and her husband (Francois Morel). Morel is a hypochondriac, convinced that a routine operation is going to kill him. He doesn't tell his wife about his fears, so she becomes convinced that he's having an affair. On the Run's detective Gilbert Melki, still hunting the criminal from that first film, begins following Morel as well. What happens next is part introspective take on human nature, part soap opera and part Three's Company episode. The movie threatens to devolve into chaos, but director Belvaux manages to keep his plates spinning and his own splintered version of romantic farce chugging along.
