With
Treasure Planet, Mickey aims for space--the final frontier--and the big cheese-chomper from Burbank achieves its goal, with another motivational morality play of the kind parents have come to expect from the Mouse House. In a galaxy far, far away, we meet Jim (
Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a young rascal obsessed with adventure of the Robert Louis Stevenson variety.
So when a map to buried treasure falls in his lap, Jim sets sail across the stars. Inventive alien creatures are voiced by top-notch talent like
Emma Thompson, David Hyde Pierce and
Martin Short, while the lack of songs (
Planet only has a few from Goo Goo Doll Johnny Rzeznik) and updated character issues, including single parenthood, money and juvenile crime, keep the whole thing pretty hip. Owing more to swashbuckling serials than sci-fi shows, this pirate's tale is shipshape and deserves to bring in the big box-office booty.
