Here's a messed-up
Tale. After recovering from a mysterious illness, adolescent sisters Im Su-jung and Moon Geun-young return from the hospital to stay at their father's country house--you know, the dark, isolated and foreboding kind. But the girls' homecoming is hardly warm and fuzzy. Dad is cold and clueless, as his new wife quickly turns into the proverbial wicked stepmother.
And then there are all those bumps in the night, ghostly apparitions and bloodied bodies. With style to spare, this Korean import cranks up the creeps through atmospheric sound design, slick cinematography and crimson-drenched art direction. But the frightfest falters in the story department, and viewers may become frustrated with the extended mind trips and heavily panting hysteria. Some nifty stuff plays out later, but without a clearer narrative focus throughout, this isn't as haunting as it might've been.
