College student Jonathan Jackson is having a pretty crappy birthday. His girlfriend gives him the boot, his mom (Barbara Hershey) suffers a stroke and, oh, the Grim Reaper tries to talk him into slashing his wrists. Of course, it's Halloween, too! As Jackson hitchhikes home to visit Hershey in the hospital, his road trip turns into a head trip. He encounters ghostly drivers, hallucinates and revisits his fear of his hometown's roller coaster.
Based on the bestselling short story,
Bullet feels feature-length. So, there are lots of cheap scares and mind games that detract from the main attraction: the interesting family drama. Good thing strong performances--from Hershey, Cliff Robertson as a lonely geezer and
David Arquette as the driver from hell (literally)--keep Mr. King's wild ride from totally derailing.
