If you fell for
Shakespeare in Love, Richard Eyre's new flamboyant film may also snatch your heart. Set in England in the 1660s, the film follows Charles II (
Rupert Everett, stealing every scene) as he returns to the throne, lifts the Puritan theater ban and decides that women can finally play women on the stage--meaning the dudes are out of the ladies' roles.
This is bad news for
Billy Crudup, who's a leading actor specializing in female leads. He's so busy dressing up that he doesn't even notice
Claire Danes has eyes for him. He does, however, see the newly liberated Danes take London by storm as he slips into unemployment. Of course, they eventually fall for each other. Plenty of reversals of fortune ensue in the most cute, well-dressed ways--and Crudup and Danes do light up the stage and screen. Do you really need to know if love triumphs in the end? It
is the theater, after all.
