This movie would be way better if
Jennifer Lopez were not in it. Without Lopez it would've been the kind of breezy, '80s-style romantic comedy where
Richard Gere saves the day with a tux, a rose and a smile. Gere plays a married working stiff in a slump who takes dance classes to meet J.Lo. He's revitalized through the fancy footwork and makes some cool friends like nutty standout Bobby Cannavale and closeted ballroomer
Stanley Tucci.
The slapsticky dancing caricatures are pretty cha-cha cheesy, and Lopez's seductive whispers are laughable. But when the movie focuses on Gere's marriage to
Susan Sarandon and how honesty can save love,
Dance will sneakily kick-step its way into your heart. Don't say we didn't warn you.
