If you're young and rich in Venezuela (look out), you're just
asking to be abducted! Apparently, Latin America is experiencing an epidemic of "express kidnappings," and this digital-video flick details one wealthy couple's ordeal. After a night of partying, model-gorgeous Mía Maestro and boyfriend Jean Paul Leroux are nabbed by three thugs demanding
mucho dinero in ransom.
While waiting for the cash drop, the inept abductors physically and verbally assault the pair, bicker amongst themselves and get wasted on drugs. Supposedly offering some serious social commentary,
Express is mostly an excuse for excessive style. With the audience held hostage, director Jonathan Jakubowicz unleashes an arsenal of done-to-death visual tricks. The frenetic camerawork and editing do heighten the tension, but there's no compensating for a sketchy script and characters whose moral contradictions are more contrived than credible. Though not completely criminal, it's not very arresting either.
