Is that the South rising again--or just our lunch? In this overdone
Fried Green Tomatoes wannabe, we're thrown back to 1940s sweet home Mississippi. Laurel Holloman is shunned by townsfolk for becoming pregnant out of wedlock, but the headstrong woman--on a supposed voyage of self-discovery--stands by her convictions and her friends in need, and even takes a stand against racism.
Taking its sugary-sweet time getting where you can already guess it's going, this drama boasts a capable cast (though Gary Cole is wasted as the stern father scowling across the supper table). But the period and people never feel real, with flat characters uttering Hallmark-worthy dialogue like "I'll never forget that special time..." Sadly,
The Rising Place never rises above its own unleavened blandness.
