Just what we need,
Ye Olde Father Dowling Mysteries.
Master and Commander's
Paul Bettany is a 14th-century priest who gets ousted from the 'hood (the
priesthood, that is) when he tosses his clothes off to be with a woman. Before you can ask, "What defrock?" he hooks up with a group of traveling actors who arrive in a village where a young female murder suspect is about to be executed.
Through the powers of stage, they reenact the crime and track down the real wrongdoer. While the basic idea of this really old-school detective story seems admirable (and, hey, didn't they do the same thing in
Hamlet?), the plot and the period just don't jibe. Bettany's monologues are inane, and a cast of terrific actors, especially Brian Cox, is completely wasted. Case (or is that
curtain?) closed!
