The Other Side of the Street

B+
Part Rear Window, part Murder She Wrote, first-time Brazilian director Marcos Bernstein's thriller examines old age, alienation--and a murder mystery! (Cue scary music now.) Veteran Brazilian star Fernanda Montenegro works as a police informant, her advanced age a perfect cover for her duties. But after she accuses Raul Cortez, the elderly judge across the street, of murdering his invalid wife, her police liaison wants to cut her loose. She's determined to prove the middle-aged cop wrong, but as she befriends Cortez to aid her informal investigation, she realizes that her personal feelings, fueled by loneliness, may be getting in the way of justice. The real thriller here is the subtle character study, pulled off to perfection by Montenegro, who has you instantly caring about her. You'll want to go home to close the shades on your house, but this one is worth more than a look.
