The Omen

C-
You'd think they could have delivered the end of the world with a bang instead of a yawn. But no, this update of the 1976 Antichrist thriller The Omen is a pointless, slickly shot release-date-in-search-of-
a-movie movie that proves even though camera technology changes, hokey is forever. The arcane plot and much of the dialogue remain largely intact (adapted slightly for a few slapdash attempts at relevancy), but what seemed like quaint apocalypticism a few decades ago now comes across as alternatingly crass and ludicrous. Considering the fine cast--Liev Schreiber in the Gregory Peck role and, in what must have seemed a sly nod to Rosemary's Baby, Mia Farrow as the Satanist nanny--you'd be right to expect more from a modern-day Omen. Instead, it's full of the same old portents and rituals, which raises the question: With 30 years to think about the inevitable, couldn't we at least have reached the end faster this time?
