The Nativity Story

C+

The Nativity Story is no whitewashed Christmas pageant, but it's no masterpiece either. The movie addresses the issues that come up when Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) is chosen to bear God's child—like, oh, she's got to convince her parents she's still a virgin (no, really!) and hustle to Bethlehem without getting caught by King Herod's musclemen.

The production values, from the costumes to the locations, create a profound sense of urgency and accuracy. The script is not so divine, though, replacing dialogue with portentous pronouncements. This lack of subtlety lends a lesson-filled "movie of the week" feel to the film.

The able actors still make out okay, except for the unseasoned Castle-Hughes. When angel Gabriel tells Mary she's to bear the new Messiah, she's as unmoved by the news as if he told her the Bears are gonna win on Sunday. That might be your reaction, too, to this ho-hum attempt to grab the Christmas crowd.
