Usually, we'd follow Wes Anderson (
Rushmore,
The Royal Tennenbaums) to the farthest corners of the sea. But we just can't get on board for this waterlogged trip. The writer-director appears so enamored with his break-all-the-rules style of filmmaking that he completely wastes the great talents of stars
Bill Murray and
Cate Blanchett. Murray is a washed-up ocean-documentary maker (with quirky crew, natch) who meets the son he never knew (
Owen Wilson) while hunting a dangerous sea creature.
Forgetting to give any character a smidgen of emotion (it's funny because it's straight-faced!), this ends up a series of strange vignettes that you won't soon care about, either. Let's hope the next exploration ain't so far off course.
