Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man

B
Baby boomers, this one's for you. Leonard Cohen, the darkly rumbling hipster-Buddhist-poet-troubadour gets his own loving tribute in this concert film/testimonial. For those who aren't devoted fans, it'll come across as a long bit of aggressive praise that errs on the side of the talking heads over the actual music. It's not that Cohen isn't deserving of those testimonials--he's one of the cooler singer-songwriters of the past four decades--it's just that when Bono and The Edge are onscreen telling the world how incredible and genius something is, it invariably comes off pompous. Meanwhile, the concert portions of the film save it all from drowning in a sea of congratulations. Antony & The Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Nick Cave and, yes, U2 with the Cohen himself take turns knocking the songs out of the park. For fans it'll be a treat. For newcomers, you're better off just buying a greatest hits CD.
