The most unfortunate thing?
Jim Carrey. Like
Mike Myers in
The Cat in the Hat and, uh, Jim Carrey in the
How the Grinch Stole Christmas, this star doesn't know how to leave good enough alone. So, there he is, delivering distracting one-liners and elastic expressions throughout this otherwise wondrously creepy adaptation of the children's book series.
The story (based on the first three books, in case you're keeping count) concerns three resourceful siblings who are suddenly orphaned and left in the hands of Carrey's devious Count Olaf. He wants their family fortune and will stop at nothing to get it, so the adventure takes us to the farthest reaches of this
Tim Burton-lite world. The child actors hold their own against Carrey, as do wacky family members Billy Connolly and
Meryl Streep. So much so, the sequels are something to look forward to. Let's just hope Carrey calms down next time.
