Kicking & Screaming is the sound of
Will Ferrell on autopilot. He screams and he kicks and he falls over stuff. It's funny, sometimes, but this is clearly a one-note idea that's stretched too far, nothing more. To save his son's dignity, Ferrell finds himself the coach of a down-and-out kids' soccer team. His biggest challenge? The champs' team is run by his ultra-competitive dad (
Robert Duvall).
A bunch of nonsense ensues, such as Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka as Ferrell's assistant coach, and an addiction to coffee that gives Ferrell a reason to act jittery and pratfall. For Ferrell fans (and who isn't?) this is okay, but it's no
Old School or
Elf. The kids, especially largely silent and pint-size Elliot Cho, add cuteness. For his next comedy, though, we'd appreciate it if Ferrell kicks it up a notch.
