In reality, wartime doesn't involve the Rock blowing up the bad guys with a missile launcher. That's called movies, folks. War is usually a boring, smelly, chauvinistic wasteland of tried patience, hot tempers and a little bit of insanity. Anthony Swofford's book--and new movie--
Jarhead is about the latter. A beefed-up
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Swofford as he and his fellow Marines (
Jamie Foxx and
Peter Sarsgaard) head to Kuwait for 1991's Desert Storm.
And they sit there, their machismo boiling over with no one to kill. Director Sam Mendes makes viewers wait with the soldiers as well. And we feel their struggles. Mendes does sacrifice a tighter plot and some character development in order to cram in a lot of cool scenes from the book. But in the end, viewers will be discharged with a clear view of war: Even boring ones really do suck.
