It's All About Love

C
It's all about lovely visuals, actually. This offbeat flick is set in an ice-agey future (2021) where people drop dead in the streets from a mysterious heart disease and Ugandans float above ground as their country loses gravity. No, really. Enter Joaquin Phoenix, who jets into New York to finalize his divorce with Claire Danes, a renowned ice skater. They rediscover their love when he helps her escape a bizarre situation involving her managers. Then there's poor, disconnected Sean Penn, who just flies around the world and philosophizes about...stuff...over his cell phone. Phoenix and Danes, their slippery Polish accents aside (yes, they're Polish!), are quite fetching together, and Danish director Thomas Vinterberg surrounds them with coolly beautiful imagery and music. It's too bad the plot's pretty preposterous and the moral-heavy mush is just too much to stomach. There's no Love here.
