In some Hollywood laboratory,
Ordinary People,
Igby Goes Down and
The Safety of Objects were fused together to construct this screwed-up family drama.
Heroes uses the teenage rebellion of
Emile Hirsch to introduce us to this dysfunctional lot, but first-time filmmaker Dan Harris misfires by attempting to do too much. The story includes moody and distant dad
Jeff Daniels, messed-up mom
Sigourney Weaver, who's more interested in getting high than trying to figure out what's wrong with her husband, and older brother Kip Pardue, who hates life.
Drug use, suicide, homosexuality and cancer all come at you, too. And Daniels' character is so sullen, he sucks the life out of the movie. It's just too much to handle.
