From Middle-earth to the middle of nowhere,
Viggo Mortensen saddles up to race 3,000 miles across the Arabian desert. Based on the arguably embellished life of American Frank Hopkins, Mortensen is a classic hero more comfortable with his horse Hidalgo than with any woman (more than once he whispers sweet nothings into his mustang's ear). Although it's too long at two hours and 15 minutes, not to mention totally formulaic, there's an admirable
Raiders of the Lost Ark action-adventure quality to it, complete with sneering bad guys attempting all sorts of villainous and dastardly deeds.
A pleasant surprise is Omar Sharif, who looks extremely comfortable as the sheikh who puts on the contest and welcomes the American. A popcorn film in every way, those who are already struck by Mortensen's charm and good looks will have a hard time saying neigh to
Hidalgo.
