Herbie: Fully Loaded

B-
Some thirty years later Herbie still loves bugging moviegoers by sputtering souped-up, family-friendly fare. Make no mistake, the VW's latest incarnation is your typical Disney stuff: sweet in spots, way too syrupy most of the time--but somehow it works. Lindsay Lohan, the daughter of a car racing family, saves the temperamental auto from the junkyard and the two rev up their engines for a face-off against NASCAR superstar Matt Dillon. There are some family issues between Lohan and on-screen dad Michael Keaton which--surprise!--get worked out in the end. Sure, the tabloid talk makes it hard for you to accept Lohan in this cutesy role, but this is a retro, G-rated fantasy anyway--so none of that matters and someone getting hit in the bum by a car door is really funny to kids. Who knows, parents who liked the old Herbie flicks might also find themselves accidentally enjoying this ride.
