The Hebrew Hammer

Hammer doesn't quite nail it, but it's not as bad as it sounds, either. Adam Goldberg cuts a pimpish figure of kosher cool as Mordechai Jefferson Carver (aka the Hebrew Hammer), a "certified circumcised dick." When Santa Claus' anti-Semitic son (Andy Dick) slays the jolly old man and plans to destroy Hanukkah, the Jewish Justice League recruits the ace detective to save the eight crazy nights. Yes, it's way out there, but for all of its indie rough spots and Dick's typical manic spiel, Goldberg works it as the black-clad, super-bad mama's boy. And Nora Dunn goes deliciously over the top as the overbearing mother with a diaper-wearing cat. By the time the silly climax rolls around, the Jew jokes have worn latke-thin, but Hammer still hits a few comic nails along the way.
