Any film that gets Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach to collaborate on the soundtrack must be doing something right, and this pseudo-history of pop music from the '50s to the '70s hits a number of high notes. Douglas is winning as a fictional singer-songwriter whose life mirrors the evolution of pop culture, but it's Turturro's over-the-top portrayal of a nebishy but lovable record producer that steals the show.
Plus, music aficionados can test their pop-trivia I.Q. by trying to guess which real-life rock icons the characters are loosely based upon.
