George A. Romero's Land of the Dead

C+
Dawn of the Dead came back to life last year looking like a heavy-metal video. Now the braaains behind the original zombie horror (George A. Romero) gets in the director's chair to give it a go again. The last of the living have set up camp in barricaded big cities, while the walking dead wander the countryside trying to get in. Against them: a new world order overseen by Dennis Hopper and soldiers like Simon Baker and John Leguizamo who venture out for supplies. You can see where this goes, right? The bloody-bizarre popcorn bonanza includes a bellybutton ring getting bitten off, spines yanked out at the neck and even Hopper picking his nose during a close-up (yuck!). Romero picks over what's left of this cinematic corpse and delivers some cool shots and witty dialogue (delivered mainly by Leguizamo). It's still pretty mindless, but, really, what did you expect from a bunch of zombies?
