Keep your cartoonish Angels and bubble-headed Blondes. The struggling young women in this Italian film don't fly through the air in stilettos or storm the Capitol Building. They do, however, have the strength to suffer through life's ambivalence, confusion and moral dilemmas. Twentysomething girlfriends Regina Orioli and Maya Sansa work happily side-by-side in a gas station until Orioli's controlling, abusive mother shows up.
The results are bloody, forcing the women to hit the road to, well, anywhere. The brooding twosome are hardly Thelma and Louise, but they embrace the idea of escape, even as they come to realize that escape is futile. This is not upbeat summer fluff, to be sure, but a welcome slice of moodiness in a film season hell-bent on happiness at all costs.
