A Foreign Affair

C+
In the real world, the subject of mail-order brides is kinda creepy for many reasons. In movies, however, it's simply a canvas for cute films about love at first sight. In this almost-cute movie, two bachelor brothers (Tim Blake Nelson and David Arquette, both adept at the "bumpkin" routine) lose their mother (and her cooking and cleaning skills) and are left to fend for themselves. So, they go to Russia and drag back a new mommy, er, wife--but just one, for the both of them. What saves this anachronistic silliness from being offensive is the light tone, a genuinely good-hearted approach to the subject matter, and Emily Mortimer (Lovely and Amazing), who's a journalist trailing the men for a documentary. In the end, it's not going to bother anyone, and it's funnier than it has a right to be. Just don't expect real comedic insight into the ways human beings stumble into love.
