Things aren't so balanced in
Equilibrium. In an Orwellian future, war has been eradicated through the suppression of emotions, thanks to urge-controlling "injections" administered by a Big Brother figure known as Father.
Christian Bale, who polices this anesthetization, decides Father doesn't know best and goes cold turkey off the meds.
Suddenly, getting all squishy over puppies and Beethoven, he joins the underground resistance and becomes the hunted instead of hunter. Yeah, the production design is cool, and buff Bale's slicked-back, black
Matrix style makes for a convincing action hero. However, he and costar Emily Watson deserve better than this sci-fi rehash, which is more interested in video-game-style violence and a high body count than exploring cool story possibilities or preventing plot inconsistencies. By the end, you'll be the one feeling numb.
