Daniel Brühl and Stipe Erceg are revolutionaries with a sense of humor. Their most potent protest consists of raiding the villas of rich citizens, rearranging furniture and leaving unsettling notes that say things like, "Your days of plenty are over" which they sign as "the Edukators." But while Erceg is visiting Spain, his girlfriend (Julia Jentsch) falls for his coconspirator.
Then the two get wrapped up in a kidnapping plot and a break-in that goes awry. From there, a potentially chilling comedy of errors ensues, where ideals finally clash with reality. Cowritten and directed by the too-earnest Hans Weingartner, this German import sometimes drags. Still, its sensitive, natural performances from a perfectly chosen cast and gripping handheld camerawork make this cinematic manifesto worth following.
