Why are drug movies so frantically paced and unreal? Well, this understated indie about the quietly desperate struggle of a cocaine-addicted working mother (
Vera Farmiga) finally moves at the pace of real life. The only way you even know she's coked up is that she scans more groceries per minute at her supermarket checker job than she does after she kicks the habit.
It's a quiet movie, no histrionics, no screaming, drooling gimme-an-Oscar moments. And for that restraint, look for Farmiga's deadly accurate and moving performance to be ignored by all but critics groups. Still, though, this marks her arrival as One to Watch. See her here, and you can say you remember the early days.
