If you have fond memories of the days when John Woo made breathlessly entertaining films, then here's some good news: The French are coming to the rescue.
Quelle surprise! The movie's near-future dystopia about the denizens of a walled-off Parisian ghetto (shades of
Escape From New York) has a razor-thin, mismatched-buddy plot, but the brutally beautiful, jaw-dropping stunt work must be seen to be believed.
Call it the anti-
Matrix--
District B13's stars include leaders of the
parkour movement, who treat urban landscapes like obstacle courses and, one might presume, think wire work is for sissies. The result is a die-hard, kinetically charged action film with the kind of shocks and starts that feel truly earned: for once, here's something you might not have seen before, and with no strings attached.
