Its plot is thin, its characters are undeveloped, and its acting is Hiltonesque. But the biggest problem with
Date Movie is that it just ain't that funny. Just in time to be late for Valentine's Day, this tries to do to romantic comedies what
Scary Movie did to horror flicks. While it jabs
The Wedding Planner,
Hitch and
Meet the Parents, it really only ends up making itself look dumb.
Most of the jokes are obvious or unoriginal, and some are just old. J.Lo's big butt,
Pretty Woman,
Michael Jackson--nothing is kept off-limits or checked for freshness, either. The only thing that saves this from a failing grade is
Alyson Hannigan, who's fearless and friendly but wasting her talents here as a woman lookin' for love in all the wrong places. Considering how this first
Date went, we don't want a second.
