Crash? This film is more like getting smashed over the head for an hour and a half. Writer-director
Paul Haggis' depressing look at Angelenos is packed with people who are overtly racist and ready to snap at any moment. And wouldn't you know it, these folks--a couple of carjackers, a district attorney and his wife, a Latino locksmith trying to make his way, and more--are all about to symbolically crash into each other's lives.
For better or worse, says the film, we're all connected. Okay, we
get it. Serious issues are given their due here and handled realistically. But even as Haggis pulls surprisingly great performances out of
Sandra Bullock and
Matt Dillon, there are way too many characters and storylines. Everything feels pat, and the result leaves you feeling a bit cheated. This
Crash won't have many witnesses.
