Conversations with Other Women

C+
An unnamed man (Aaron Eckhart) flirts with an unnamed woman (Helena Bonham Carter) at a wedding, and because the whole movie is shot in split-screen, we get to see both of their reactions in close-up at the same time. But what seems like a random meeting is not--the two have a past, although it's not clear if they really don't recognize each other at first or just love being incredibly coy and talking about themselves in the third person. Director Hans Canosa seems to be going for a French romantic drama vibe, as indicated by the French songs played conspicuously on the soundtrack. However, it's hard to imagine a Gallic film would make such an issue of Carter's character being over the hill at 40 or straight-facedly claiming that Eckhart is fat by any reasonable definition. Apparently, both are old enough now that they need to have younger actors stand in for them in flashbacks--Brick's Nora Zehetner nails Carter's accent, while Erik Eidem looks and sounds nothing like Eckhart. Watch for a funny cameo by Reno 911's Thomas Lennon.
