Yeah, cheaper is right. So are half-baked sequels and failed follow-ups. While the original (okay, not the 1950 version, but the one that came out a few years ago) was sentimental in all the right places and offered enough slapstick to make both parents and children laugh, this rehash has none of that charm and, well, not much else to like, either. As much as we love
Steve Martin, this comes off as a blatant cash grab--and we expect better from the guy.
And the story? You know it from the poster: Martin's Baker clan vacations at the lake, where he meets superrich old nemesis Eugene Levy. Soon, their two competitive spirits get all worked up, and in order to name a champion family, they cook up some Olympic-style games in which the dads' cutthroat behavior goes way too far. While there might be a shortage of kid-friendly films out right now, it might be best to just wait it out. This Baker's dozen will be on the discount food aisle in about a week.
