James Caviezel replaces his passion of the
Christ with a passion for a different hole-y legend in this golfing biopic. Caviezel plays Bobby Jones, a celebrated duffer who
rose to stardom as the only person to ever take the title of Grand Slam Champion (by winning a bunch of major tournaments in one year), and keeping his
unpaid amateur status throughout his short and successful career (he retired at 28).
Is that what
Tiger Woods would do? Probably not, and that's what makes this character study worthy of a movie treatment. Caviezel's soulful eyes add heft to the importance and class of the flick's focus. But the movie struggles to drum up excitement during the golfing games and gets bloated by trying to examine every angle of Jones. Golf fans will dig the scenes on historical courses, but most will be better advised to drive themselves elsewhere.
