Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for
The Usual Suspects and now he could grab a Grammy. Spacey gives life--and astonishing voice--to the late Bobby Darin, who shot to stardom as a teen idol with "Splish Splash" before mutating into a saloon singer, folk singer and more, then dying of heart problems at age 37. Spacey's affection for the character seeps through every scene, and he nails both Darin's charm and his foibles.
Kate Bosworth plays his true love, Sandra Dee, and their love-hate relationship gives the film it's irregularly beating heart. While
Beyond doesn't go much beyond standard biopic status, Spacey's singing stays with you long after the credits have rolled. If money's tight, pass on the popcorn, and pick up the soundtrack. It goes down sweet as buttah.
