Finally, the Benji movie that dares to get "meta" about the very concept of Benji. Not that anyone asked for it, but still.
Off the Leash admits in its opening voice-over that "Benji" is a fictional character and that talent scouts are searching for a new dog actor to play him. Enter a bigger, longer-haired 2.0 version of Benji--named, uh, "Puppy" for the duration of the film--accompanied by another dog that
looks a lot like the old Benji but is named "Lizard Tongue.
"
Wha? Together, the doggy duo busts a puppy mill and saves a kid from an abusive dad. And while it may be free of the potty humor and cruelty that plague many contemporary kids' movies, its cheap lack of a decent script, acting or canine charm is lethal. Little ones will be happy, but adults with fond memories of the '70s film will feel like they've been force-fed Snausages.
