We're hardly feeling the buzz of
Bee Season. Here are the basics: The daughter of a religious-studies college professor (
Richard Gere) and his wife (Juliette Binoche) has a remarkable knack for spelling and quickly starts winning local competitions. And here's where it gets weird: Gere thinks her gift of putting letters together is more than coincidence.
He believes it's a form of Kabbalah, a way to communicate directly with God. Well, maybe
Madonna will dig
that, but the muddied storytelling that follows will set the rest of us off. Among other bad subplots, Binoche takes a descent into mental illness, and the couple's older son pursues the Hare Krishna religion. They're all interesting subjects to unravel, but it's just too much for one movie. So, while we can't fault this flick for being lazy, it definitely loses its sting along the way.
