Even if you don't know anything about ballet, this amazing documentary will leave you walking on air. It's a lucid history of the famed Ballets Russes: a dance company that united Russia's imperial past with the avant-garde artistry of Nijinsky, Stravinsky and Picasso. Here, the troupe's tangled story--its mutations, struggles, various rebirths and, finally, end--is magically captured and compiled by directors Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine.
A stroke of luck even elevates this documentary from musty analysis to living history when the filmmakers caught the first-ever official reunion of the company in 2000. There, they filmed a host of aged but feisty former Russes dancers, and on this foundation and subsequent interviews, they built a priceless history. Give it a whirl. You'll feel great afterward.
