The Assassination of Richard Nixon

B+
Bureaucracy can surely make you crazy, but this might be taking it a tad too far. Based on true events from the '70s, Samuel Bicke (Sean Penn) feels like he needs to make a stand or remain a trivial part of the universe. Bicke has good intentions but doesn't know how to put his repressed feelings into positive actions. First off, he's a bit mentally disabled (hints of I Am Sam?), and he's trying to cope with a divorce while keeping his sales job. He blames it all on the Nixon, so he decides the solution is to kill the president. First-time director Niels Mueller offers no ray of hope for either his characters or the audience, but Penn's dour performance synchs up with the constant gloominess. Sure, it's a bit glum, and Penn's anti-government rants go overboard at times, but this creepy bit of American history is pretty killer. Well, almost killer...
