Israeli filmmaker Danae Elon, now living in New York, searches for a piece of her past in this film. She's mainly in search of the children of Mahmoud Musa Obeidallah, the Palestinian man who worked for her family in Jerusalem. For 20 years, Musa was Elon's caretaker and second father, sacrificing time with his own sons so he could afford to send them to America.
Elon tracks down Musa's sons in New Jersey, brings her own parents over from Italy and unwittingly prompts Musa himself to risk his life to travel to the U.S. The big reunion is full of conflicting emotions and palpable resentments (and you thought
your family get-togethers were awkward). By keeping it subtle and personal--and getting amazing honesty from her subjects--Elon has created a poignant exploration of not only the Palestinian/Israeli conflict but also the deep, complex bonds between loved ones. Touching, isn't it?
