Watching the David Mamet-penned
American Buffalo is like sitting through a beginner's acting class in which Hoffman is the guest of honor and Corrente is the acting coach who never made it big. As a fast-talking hustler who convinces his friend (Dennis Franz) to steal, Hoffman is out to show us how it's done, over-emphasizing every gesture, word and breath.
Meanwhile, an awestruck Corrente laps it all up, throwing subtlety and discretion to the wind. These are nobody's finest hours.
