The makers of this film were outgunned from the beginning. Trying to be historically accurate, ratcheting up emotional drama and making an epic film about a touchy subject like the Battle of San Jacinto is a losing venture. The final product couldn't overcome it. While accurate, this period piece of American history when much of America was up for grabs is slowly paced, does little to make you care about the people who gave their lives during this bloody time and is, well, just boring.
Actually, most of the interesting stuff happens
away from the infamous battle site.
Billy Bob Thornton plays legendary coonskin-cap-wearer Davy Crockett with just the right mix of serious-mindedness and levity, and
Dennis Quaid is straightforward as General Sam Houston. But others are
one-note characters and better left forgotten. Just like this movie.
