Moses Passes Staff to Mickey Mouse
On Wednesday morning, at the campus of the American Film Institute, Charlton Heston presented the staff he used to part the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments to the giddy, tuxedoed rodent, who accepted the vaunted stick on behalf of Walt Disney World.
The Moses staff will join the Rosebud sled from Citizen Kane, speeder bikes from Return of the Jedi, Bogie's suit from The Maltese Falcon and other cinematic knick-knacks at the AFI Showcase, which is part of the Disney-MGM Studio Theme Park in Orlando.
Until today, the staff has never been displayed publicly. Heston has kept his most famous prop in his den ever since making the Cecil B. DeMille Bible flick in 1956. Indeed, after the presentation ceremony, Heston seemed reluctant to let it go, walking around with the pole for at least 10 minutes before finally relinquishing it to Disney folks, who immediately stored it in a van.
The prop--technically on indefinite loan from Heston--will be housed in a silk-lined case, backed by a blown-up image of Heston as Moses .
Heston has strong ties to the institute, which specializes in educating filmmakers and preserving films. He served as chairman of the board from 1976 to 1983 and is currently board president. Heston also christened the AFI Showcase in October.
Showcase receipts bankroll AFI preservation efforts, such as the institute's restoration of the 1912 version of Richard III, the oldest extant American feature.
